Situated in Marion County, Indiana, Beech Grove is a small community with an estimated population of more than 14,200 residents. Part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area, Beech Grove is separate city with its own school system, library, fire and police departments as well as many other services. While it’s primarily a residential community, a number of large businesses are also housed in the area, including the Regional Heart Center of the St. Francis Hospital.
Beech Grove was a rural section of Marion County by the turn of the 20th century, and got its name from the abundance of beech trees in the area. The actual city started out as a company town with the “Big Four” (the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad constructing a new railroad repair facility known as the Beech Grove Shops. Incorporated in late 1906, the city did not experience rapid growth until the railroad facility was completed in 1908.
Growth continued with two annexations after the World War II - with the last one occurring in 1967, prior to the Unigov legislation that merged the city of Indianapolis with the rest of Marion County to prevent future annexation. As of today, Beech Grove is a neat and well-maintained city, which offers its residents the benefits of both a small town and large city. The crime rate is also one of the lowest in the region, making it the ideal place to settle with your family.
The city council and mayor are responsive, and at the same time, located in close proximity to the city’s offices, factories, recreational facilities and services. The city is primarily served by the Beech Grove City Schools - however, some of its region is also served by the Franklin Township Community School Corporation. Beech Grove’s school district consists of five facilities namely, Hornet Park, Beech Grove Middle, Central Elementary, Beech Grove High and South Grove Intermediate.
